Some actors surprised me with their movie choices, though not really playing against type but the plot certainly takes them into far darker and salacious territories. Take for instance Al Pacino in the little-known Cruising (1980) where he played a cop who has to frequent gay bars and even don leather outfit for an undercover assignment to search for a serial murderer who targets gay men. Pretty stereotypical of the world it depicts, but, hey, they do exist.Hardcore is not gratuitous or tries to be sexy in its portrayal of the sex industry: any nudity involves are plainly captured. The lovely Ms. Hubley (ex-wife of Kurt Russel, as it turns out), the light amidst the gloom, isn’t afraid to show some skin but it’s done in a matter-of-fact manner, just an ordinary day in her occupation catering to horny men. Taken as it is, it’s a depiction of human’s carnal activities (or simply, a profession), but seen through the eyes of our religious protagonist, it’s a sleazy and sinful world populated by someone’s daughter.
