“Marco Polo”“Marseilles”But, if you’re willing to look past that head-scratching hurdle (like I did), Marseilles offers some interesting narratives, such as Robert is addicted to cocaine, a substitute for morphine formerly used for medical purposes, and the two political contenders trying to win voters’ heart by visiting slum areas and promising them of good things to come if they were elected. Social class divisions involving immigrants—a sadly hot-button issue across the European continent—also plays a large role in the plot as Robert’s daughter, the journalist Julia, is having a relationship with one; and the use of thugs being hired to intimidate opponents is prevalent as well. That definitely sounds familiar.“Veep”“Better Call Saul” (Season 2) “The Flash” I also love how they diversify the cast (these days it should come naturally, if ya ask me) by having Jesse L. Martin as Barry’s surrogate father, police officer Joe West, and Candice Patton as his daughter (and Allen’s love interest), Iris. And you got to give credit for the screenwriters for coming up with scientific speak and theories (and the actors for delivering them with a knowing face), especially regarding the alternate universes, and most of the time I don’t even understand what they’re talking about. (They could be gibberish for all I know but I like to believe they hired actual consultants to give the series scientific cred.) And as a welcome surprise for fanboys, director Kevin Smith (Mallrats, Dogma, Tusk) is the DC fanboy behind the lens for episode 19 ("Back to Normal"), which turns out to be one of the most thrilling and funniest episodes in season 2.
