“Far from The Madding Crowd” There’s a subplot involving Frank’s pregnant girlfriend (Juno Temple) that isn’t integrated smoothly into the main story until the end, as well as the courting of Bathsheba by a rich, mature bachelor (Michael Sheen), which is both endearing and disturbing, all of which further complicates the life of our lead heroine. Some scenes don’t work, like when Troy’s bizarre display of swordsmanship in his first dalliance with Bathsheba in the woods, which I guess is intended to be some sort of foreplay, and, yes, the ending might be a tad melodramatic but that’s dictated by the nature of the novel.“Belle”
